Installing SQL SERVER 2000 Enterprise Edition on Windows XP

SQL 2000 Enterprise Edition is designed for Windows 2000 systems. Windows 2003 and XP generally can’t install it and need to use the Personal Edition. Of course, if you’ve painstakingly downloaded the Enterprise Edition without knowing this and can’t install it, you must be disappointed, right? Here’s a method for installing SQL 2000 Enterprise Edition on XP for reference~

The method is as follows:

  1. Find the MSDE directory in the SQL Server installation disc and click setup.exe to install it. The process is simple - just click Next until done.

  2. Restart Windows XP, and you’ll see the SQL service icon appear.

  3. Take out the SQL Server installation disc again and directly install the client tools (no need to explain much, right? The simplest method is to click autorun.exe in the disc root directory)

Install according to prompts. During self-check, it will know the system is not a SERVER version and will prompt to install client tools only. (Haha, I already have the server side)

  1. Open Enterprise Manager and try connecting with the SA user. Did you find that SA user login failed? That’s because you haven’t associated it with trusted SQL SERVER connection yet. Fortunately, this only requires a small modification to the system registry:

Type regedit in Run to open the Registry Editor, find

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\MSSQLSERVER\MSSQLSERVER]

There’s a key value LoginMode in this item, which defaults to 1. Change it to 2 and restart the computer.

  1. Open Enterprise Manager again and try connecting. Is it OK now?
